Chapter 7 Summary

Misery breaks into Lowe’s room. She snoops through his things and finds skilled architectural drawings and a sketch of her face. The next day she watches a barbecue from her window, feeling lonely. She admires how Lowe interacts with his pack. She sees Max coaxing Ana into the woods. Misery chases them in spite of the sun and being barefoot. When Max doesn’t put Ana down, she starts to attack, but is instantly surrounded by Weres.

Chapter 8 Summary

Back inside the house, Max is whining for his mother. When Lowe asks the pack what happened, Cal says that Misery spoiled the trap they were setting for Max by coming to Ana’s aid. Max won’t reveal who put him up to the kidnapping and tells Lowe that Lowe is not the rightful Alpha. When everyone steps forward to deal with Max, Misery intervenes. She can put him under a thrall and hypnotize him. When Lowe asks her why she’d help, Misery says she cares about Ana. Lowe allows Misery to use the thrall, but before Max can reveal information, Lowe asks Misery to leave the room.

Mick tells Misery that Lowe knew Max attacked her first in the corridor. Lowe didn’t reveal that knowledge so Max would feel that he was free to act again. While everyone is busy with Max, Misery breaks into Lowe’s office and computer. She doesn’t get far before a wolf appears, growling at her.

Chapter 9 Summary

The wolf’s fangs are frightening, but Misery responds with sarcasm. Lowe appears and calls off Cal. He interrogates her and brings in Alex to figure out what she’s doing to the computer. Misery realizes Lowe expected her actions. He reveals she left her scent on everything she touched in his room. Alex and Misery share a moment of mutual admiration for each other’s computer work before Alex reveals that Misery is searching for Serena Paris and the name of a newspaper. Lowe smells fear on Misery, though he seems to not recognize Serena’s name. Lowe frightens Misery, saying he will break the pact and kill her if she isn’t honest. Despite herself, Misery is attracted to his blood as he looms over her. She tells Lowe about Serena and how she agreed to the marriage to look for her. They are interrupted by Ana, who wants a bedtime story. Lowe calls her Liliana Esther Moreland, and Misery realizes the name in Serena’s planner may be Ana’s, not Lowe’s.

Chapter 10 Summary

Lowe and Misery sit at the kitchen table. They talk about Serena and what she could be investigating. Lowe decides to trust Misery. He confides that Ana is half Were, half Human, which is supposed to be impossible. Lowe tells her about the old Alpha injuring his mother and others. He suspects the that the former Alpha’s seconds and Roscoe’s mate are behind trouble that’s happening in their territory.

Together, Lowe and Misery speculate about who else other than Serena could know about Ana. Lowe says he can smell changes of feeling so doesn’t suspect his seconds. Misery eats some peanut butter, surprising Lowe. Misery is embarrassed at this show of indulgence. Lowe gives Misery access to all the Were technology along with Alex to both help and monitor her. She shows him the burn from the sun under her shirt. He chokes but relaxes when Ana runs down saying she’s had a nightmare.

Chapter 11 Summary

Misery is amused that Alex is still terrified of her when they work together. Juno apologizes to Misery for misjudging her. She tells Misery that Lowe never had his own life, as he was forced to challenge the old Alpha early. When Misery asks about Gabi, Lowe’s mate who is the Collateral, Juno is confused.

Three nights before the full moon, Mick tells Misery not to leave the house. Ana comes to visit Misery on the full moon. She is sad Lowe isn’t there and that she can’t shift with the others. Misery helps her feel better and falls asleep with a knife under her pillow, ready to protect the little girl and herself. Lowe returns and wakes her up. He was away meeting with Humans and Misery’s father. They debate if Ana would be a symbol of unity or a threat. He takes Ana and tells Misery where to find a sharper knife next time.

Chapter 12 Summary

The pack is treating Misery positively, a new experience for the Vampyre. She is at her first pack dinner, pretending to eat. Ana finds out Misery doesn’t know her own birthday and insists they have a party that weekend. Mick and Lowe are arguing about Lowe going alone to visit Emery, the old Alpha’s wife who they think is behind the insurrections. Misery wonders if Gabi is having such a decent time with Owen in Vampyre territory.

Chapters 7-12 Analysis

The second section of the novel continues to develop according to romance tropes by slowly escalating the emotional and sexual tension between the two main characters. Misery is given evidence that her new husband is attracted to her and is beginning to trust her, and with this comes signs of acceptance from his community. And yet because she has low self-esteem, Misery can’t believe that he has feelings for her. A delayed union between the lovers is a major feature of the genre, one which Bride follows. This prolongs and escalates the dramatic tension. It also allows space in the novel for the mystery of Serena’s disappearance and the development of ancillary relationships, such as that between Misery and Ana.

As in other romance novels, Lowe and Misery continue to build on their initial attraction by slowly discovering tantalizing details about each other. They overcome many incorrect assumptions and establish trust. Lowe takes Misery into his confidence about Ana, and Misery’s confession about Serena helps diminish his suspicion, allowing them to forge an honest relationship. However, the future lovers continue to experience unfulfilled desire, danger, and insecurity, maintaining tension. The Weres, including Lowe, seem to threaten Misery on the full moon; this keeps Misery guessing and the excitement high.

This section focuses on how Love Transcends Boundaries. When Misery uses her specific Vampyre skills to help the pack protect Ana, the Weres’ opinions about Vampyres begin to change. The Weres see Misery as capable of loyalty and sacrifice, and Misery sees their camaraderie as something to be envied rather than disdained. While boundaries remain, they are starting to diminish. This sets a trend for the rest of the novel. Boundaries will continue to disappear as respect and regard turns to love. Because exposing her true self and skills results in acceptance, Misery begins to see herself through less cynical eyes. While she still hasn’t accepted herself, even going so far as trying to scrub her smell off, she makes good headway toward healing.

Ana acts as a unifier. Misery is willing to sacrifice herself to help the child, convincing Lowe and the pack that she is trustworthy. Ana’s kidnapping has brought the pack together, but even more importantly, it has brought together Lowe and Misery. Their worry for the little girl takes their chemistry to the next level, from physical attraction to emotional and intellectual bonding.

Ana also helps Misery achieve self-acceptance. Through Ana’s unabashed delight and celebration of traits that Misery feels awkward about, Misery begins to view herself differently. Thanks to Ana, she begins seeing herself as someone who might be valuable to others rather than shameful.
